LONG BEACH, Calif. (April 12, 2015) – Fredric Aasbo wins first round of 2015 Formula Drift season in Long Beach.
“We’re in this for the title and now we’re in the lead of the Formula Drift World Championship and the U.S. Formula Drift Championship,” said Aasbo. “That’s how you want to start the season.”
Southern California fans packed the sold out grandstands for the Formula Drift Streets of Long Beach event which uses turns 9, 10 and 11 of the Grand Prix track and features a long high-speed entry with narrow walls and no margin for error. Aasbo qualified third on Friday putting himself in a strong position for the main event on Saturday. “It was such a hard day of competition that by the end, the cars were just worn out,” said Aasbo. “For me, that last corner became a real challenge during my battle with Ryan (Tuerck). I lost second gear and had to shift between first and third.”
Aasbo pushed through the mechanical issues and took the top spot on the podium putting him ahead of the competition early in the season. Fredric Aasbo and the Papadakis Racing team will next appear at Round 2 of the Formula Drift championship, May 8-9, at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga.
