After a last-minute phone call late last year to fill in for the injured Paul Morris in the #67 UFD Racing Stadium Super Truck, Jerett Brooks capitalized on his opportunity. A 2nd place finish in the final round of 2017 for Jerett as a fill-in would help Morris clinch the series championship. Fast forward a month to round 1 of the 2018 SST season this past weekend and Jerett would yet again be asked to fill-in. Jerett was certainly excited to get another opportunity to build on the momentum from December.
On Friday, Jerett would roll out to practice at the Lake Elsinore Storm Stadium in the #1 UFD Racing truck and lay down some of the fast times of the day. In fact, after the third and final practice of the day, Jerett was on top of the leader board almost a half-second faster than the field. The momentum would carry into Saturday’s qualifying sessions as Jerett ended up with the fastest qualifying time of the event. He’d start on row 2 of the first heat race.
In Heat 1, Jerett would make quick work in moving to the front. He’d find himself battling with Robby Gordon for the lead by lap 2. A pass by Jerett would put himself in the lead with a few laps to go. Gordon would pressure Jerett but a caution came out with 2 laps to go while Jerett remained in the lead. With one lap to go, a power-steering belt would fail while leading the race and Jerett would have to pull off the track. After a quick belt change, a win in the LCQ eventually put Jerett on the 4th row to start the main event.
In the Main Event, Jerett would have to work his way from a deep starting spot up to the front. He’d reach the leaders with 9 laps to go as a caution came out and he’d restart the race in 3rd. Unfortunately, he’d end up suffering the same mechanical failure as he did in Heat 1 and he’d have to pull off again with power steering issues to end the Main in 12th place. The points earned for the top qualifier spot and the 12th place finish will transfer to defending SST Champion, Paul Morris, when he resumes racing in round 2.
