JULY 13, 2015
The Mint 400, The Great American Desert Race is quite possibly the most popular off road event of the year. Four days of pre-race activities combined with over three-hundred race entries and hundreds of vendors in attendance make this an event you can’t miss.
The week starts off right with an off road truck parade that goes down the famous Las Vegas Blvd. One-hundred race trucks line up side-by-side and span the entire Las Vegas strip. With the sound of thunder echoing the pavement, the eight-hundred horse power trucks catch everyone’s attention in town.
The rest of the week is jam packed with action and the epicenter is the Golden Nugget Hotel on Fremont Street. As the sun sets over the old Vegas strip, the activities begin with the KMC Wheels Pit Crew Challenge. Four class 1500 and ten Trick Trucks race against time to see who can change two huge off road tires the fastest. The winning team from each class took home a handful of prizes and the coveted KMC Enduro Pit Crew Trophy. After a hard fought battle, the 2015 champions were crowned: Trick Truck class winner Team Olliges, and the 1500 class title was won by Cops Racing.
Friday morning marks another exciting day for racers, vendors, and spectators. Tech and contingency gave fans a chance to meet their favorite racers and see the new wheels KMC had on display. From 8am to 5pm the race trucks get pushed down Fremont Street by their pit crews giving fans a chance to take pictures and interact with the race teams and vendors. KMC invited Bryce Menzies and the rest of the KMC racers to sign autographs and take photos with fans in the KMC wheels photo booth. At the end of the day we had fan favorites Patrick Dempsey, Patrick Long, Bryce Menzies, Todd Romano, RPM Motorsports, Cameron Steele and Jim Beaver hanging out. With the sun setting, the racers and teams retreat to their rooms for some much needed rest before the big day.
A 5am wakeup call is tough for most, but off road racers are used to battling the elements. Darkness covered the racecourse as drivers Patrick Dempsey and Patrick Long left the line in their Zero1 Odyssey racecars. Heading off into the unknown for four hundred grueling miles of dusty, hard packed terrain, drivers navigate a maze of intertwining trails that never seem to end. As the checkered flag waives the teams roll in, some on their own power, some defeated by the brutal desert terrain. When the dust settled, it was
