Pastrana double header in Iowa: K&N and Nationwide

May 21 2012

IOWA SPEEDWAY, IA (May 20, 2012) -- No. 99 Nitro Circus The Movie 3D Toyota driver Travis Pastrana finished fourth in Saturday night’s NASCAR K&N Pro East Series race at Iowa Speedway. The Pastrana Racing driver qualified 11th, but started in the back of the 36-car field after changing tires due to a spin on his second-lap in qualifying.

“The No. 99 Toyota felt good all race. It was actually car that Brett Moffitt won with last year here so I had a little pressure. I did a 720 during qualifying on the backstretch and flat spotted all the tires. We had to start dead last because we had to change tires. For me, to get my career best finish and work my way through the whole the entire field was a big confidence booster for me. The car was really good until I started bumping off of people and we lost a little of the downforce. The car was a little tight on the end but I was still able to make the lower groove work. I got a little low on the final restart. I think I had a chance to win if I wouldn’t have made that mistake. Overall it was a great run for me.”

The 28-year-old driver picked off his competitors one-by-one and moved into the top 10 by lap 53 and into the top-five by lap 114. A late caution forced the race into overtime and gave Pastrana a chance for his first NASCAR victory.

On the restart, the 11-time X Games gold medalist moved inside the leader, but his car got a little loose and lost several spots. Pastrana finished fourth to grab his career best NASCAR finish. Pastrana and the No. 99 K&N Pro East series team returns to action June 2 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The news from the Nationwide race wasn't as positive for Pastrana. The No. 99 Boost Mobile Toyota finished 26th in Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Iowa Speedway.

“We struggled all day. I did learn a lot today but I wish we could have had a better finish. The No. 99 Boost Mobile Toyota was way too tight for me. We made a lot of changes in the pits but nothing seemed to help at all. Hopefully we can learn from this and bring a great car to Charlotte next weekend.”

The RAB Racing driver started the race a career best 15th but struggled with a tight-handling condition throughout the 250-lap race. Pastrana lost a lap to the leaders on lap 55 and lost a second lap on lap 155. The No. 99 lost power on lap 199. The RAB Racing crew fixed the problem, but not before Pastrana lost 20 laps making repairs. The No. 99 Boost Mobile Toyota team returns to action next Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
