CERRITOS, CA (May 10, 2012) – Menzies Motorsports will return to the storied Tecate SCORE Baja 500 this June to defend their 2011 title. The squad is favored for a top result in 2012 after scoring a decisive win at the race a year ago.
In 2011, Menzies and co-driver Pete Mortensen drew the No. 1 starting position and led the top class trophy trucks throughout the nine-hour race. They finished more than 10 minutes ahead of the next-fastest trophy truck finisher.
The team, which rides on KMC wheels, won't start first in 2012. But they are up to the challenge posed by a talented field and notoriously tough terrain. So far, a total of 38 trophy trucks -- the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850 horsepower, unlimited production trucks -- are on the entry list for the Tecate SCORE Baja 500.
Menzies joins a list of former winners expected to compete including Andy and Scott McMillin (2010), who also ride on KMC wheels, B.J. Baldwin (2008), Brian Collins (2006, 2007), Robby Gordon (2005), Alan Pflueger (2004) and Curt LeDuc (1995).
With late entries accepted up to race morning, the 44th running of the contest is expected to feature competitors from 30 U.S. States, and 10 countries.
The green flag is set to drop for the race at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 2, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed by the car and truck classes three hours after the last ATV -- at approximately 10 a.m.
The elapsed-time competition will start and finish in front of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center on Boulevard Costero in the heart of Ensenada, leaving and returning into the city through the always spectator-laden Arroyo Wash.
In addition to season class point championships, racers are also competing for part of the nearly $400,000 in cash purse and contingency postings each race, along with the annual SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards. Categories will be determined by public on-line voting and season points.
For 2012 Menzies Motorsports has a packed competition schedule, with a return to short course and desert competition, including the SCORE Baja 500, BITD Vegas To Reno and SCORE’s Baja 1000.
